With extensive experience in emergency management, Nick recognised the vital role emergency planning plays, in keeping our communities safe.
Nick has dedicated 34 years to emergency services, beginning his career with the NZ Police in 1985, before moving to the New Zealand Fire Service in 1987. Throughout his 28 years with the Fire Service, Nick spent 23 years as an Officer in Charge.
After leaving the Fire Service in 2014, Nick worked in his family business until 2022. An opportunity arose and he returned to Fire and Emergency NZ, to join the Community Risk Team, based in the Nelson-Marlborough Fire District. In this role, Nick served as both a Risk Reduction Advisor and a Community Advisor for Readiness and Recovery.
Emergency planning has been one of Nick's key interests throughout his career. Nick has effectively developed risk and tactical plans for at-risk premises.
Most recently, Nick supported the Aniseed Valley community to create their Wildfire Plan and drafted the first multi-agency wildfire plan for the Abel Tasman National Park - an unprecedented initiative in New Zealand.
Nick's enjoyment for Risk Management Planning means starting SafeWay was a logical next step in his career, allowing him to share his vast and extensive career experience with others and continue to do the work he loves – supporting and creating safer communities.
Our logo incorporates elements symbolising safety and protection - design elements which embody our kaupapa of promoting preparedness and secure environments through effective planning.
Our visual identity reflects both Māori perspectives on safety and the core values of our organisation.
Maunga (Mountains): The mountain- like shapes represent the maunga surrounding Motueka. In Māori culture, maunga are revered as ancestral guardians, offering strength and protection. The phrase “head to the hills for safety” reflects this idea.
Line Art & Cultural Significance: Inspired by Māori art forms such as tāniko and whakairo, the logo’s line-based patterns reflect safety, structure, and strategic planning.
